Audition Form Musical

MRS SNUSTAD (VIVIAN) is 60 to 70 years old, a widow and the most conservative of the ladies. She is the matriarch “Queen” of the kitchen. She is the one who makes sure the food tastes good before it leaves the kitchen. Her duties are well defined (by her.) Her word is not to be tested and her decisions are final. She is a mix of Shirley McClain as “Weeser,” Bea Arthur as “Maude,” Doris Roberts as Marie Barone in “Everybody loves Raymond” and Estelle Getty as Sophia “Mom” in “Golden Girls.” Vocally - the highest voice of the ladies. Low: A flat below middle C. High: E, a major 10th above middle C.

MRS. ELROY ENGELSON (KARIN) is 40 to 45 years old, second in line to take over the kitchen. She is a fabulous cook - neat and tidy in appearance and quite pretty in a very conservative way, almost looking like Jackie Kennedy with everything perfectly in its place. Her daughter is Signe (Beverly).Vocally - the middle voice of the ladies. Low: A flat below middle C. High: D, a major 9th above middle C. She should have a comfortable belt.

MRS. GILMER GILMERSON (MAVIS) is in her late 50’s, is a farmer’s wife and a grandmother. She is not afraid of work and can fix ANYTHING mechanical. She is the most physical comedienne of the three ladies because of her “jump in and work” attitude. She appears rather disheveled. She is somewhat manly, and everyone loves her. Vocally – the lowest voice of the ladies. Low: A flat below middle C. High: D, a major 9th above middle C.

SIGNE ENGELSON (BEVERLY) is between 18 and 20 years old and the daughter of Karin. She has just started college at the University of Minnesota, often comes home to visit. She is very sweet and loves working with her mother in the kitchen. She wants to make her mark in the world, welcoming change, not only in the kitchen but in the country as the musical is set from 1964 to 1968. She has a “care free” attitude not afraid to challenge authority or respectfully speak her mind. Vocally - Low: A below middle C. High: G flat above middle C.

PASTOR E.L. GUNDERSON (known simply as PASTOR) is the same age as Karin (40 – 45). He has just married a young wife and the ladies all seem to have crushes on him in a respectful way. He is goaded by the fact that he comes from a family of pastors, and his brother, not he, inherited his father’s church down the road. He has a very friendly and intimate relationship with God, almost like Tevye in Fiddler of the Roof, and he always knows that the church runs BEST when the kitchen is happy. Vocally - Low: B flat, a major 9th below middle C. High: G flat above middle C.
